PSA Antwerp (PSAA) has joined the Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA), a global coalition aiming to accelerate the adoption of battery-electric port equipment and achieve net-zero emissions in ports.
PSA Antwerp powers sustainability with zero-emission tech
A key component is the Green Straddle Carrier Programme, through which PSAA is evaluating fully electric straddle carriers to decarbonise its operations.
Francis De Ruytter, Regional Head Sustainability, PSA Europe, Mediterranean, and the Americas, stated: “Straddle carriers are essential for our daily terminal operations but are also responsible for the vast majority of our direct emissions in Belgium. That’s why we are investing heavily in our Green Straddle Carrier Program.”
Transitioning to zero-emission port equipment involves technical and financial hurdles, such as limited standardised charging infrastructure and interoperability between equipment from various manufacturers.
Edward Tah, Managing Director PSA Belgium, said: “Through this alliance, we aim to accelerate the transition by working closely with other front-runners to scale up zero-emission equipment. The unique collaboration across the entire value chain — from terminals to manufacturers and ports — is key to making this possible.”
PSA Antwerp’s ZEPA involvement complements its broader investments in electric yard equipment, quay cranes, and infrastructure upgrades, all part of its push towards sustainable operations and industry leadership.
The Port of Antwerp-Bruges recently reported positive container growth in H1 2024, with volumes rising by 3.6 per cent to 77 million tonnes and by 3.7 per cent to 6.91 million TEUs. In the first six months of 2025, the total throughput of Port of Antwerp-Bruges was 137.2 million tonnes, a decrease of 4.3 per cent compared to the same period last year.
