Porthos has completed the installation of a 20-kilometre offshore pipeline that will transport captured CO2 from Rotterdam’s port industry to permanent storage beneath the North Sea seabed.
Port of Rotterdam CO2 pipeline installed for Porthos project
The offshore pipeline for the Porthos CO2 transport and storage project has been successfully installed.
The approximately 20-kilometre pipeline will carry captured carbon dioxide from industrial facilities in the Port of Rotterdam to offshore storage sites beneath the North Sea.
Installation began in spring 2025, with the onshore connection extended under the sea wall before laying continued offshore toward platform P18-a, located above depleted gas fields.
The pipeline runs from the compressor station at Maasvlakte across the seabed to the platform, where CO2 will be permanently stored over three kilometres below the seabed.
Pipe sections were welded onboard a vessel, laid along the seabed, and then embedded in trenches before being covered with sand to enhance stability and protection.
Recently, the Port of Rotterdam Authority selected NPM participation Conclusion as its digital partner to manage and further develop its web environment, including the corporate website and a reservation tool for port users.
