Due to the remote location, a new power connection was installed to enable on-site charging.

The site supports a range of battery-powered machinery, including electric trucks, rollers, asphalters, excavators, and a mobile crane, alongside charging facilities for electric vehicles used by personnel.

Sustainability was a key component of the tender, and BAM met the requirements by proposing emission-free equipment and environmentally friendly materials such as sustainable asphalt and concrete.

The equipment is now fully operational, supported by fast chargers and a transformer station powered by a dedicated Stedin grid connection.

The Princess Alexia Viaduct is an overpass near Prinses Alexiahaven, spanning the industrial and utility pipeline corridors, the Container Exchange Route (CER), and the railway.

As part of the project, the Port of Rotterdam Authority is doubling Maasvlakteweg to four lanes and adding a cycle path along Mekongweg. The viaduct will replace the current level crossing once completed.

Due to initially low traffic volumes following the opening of Maasvlakte 2, a temporary level crossing was built on the Maasvlakteweg near Prinses Alexiahaven.

With new terminals and factories under development and container throughput increasing, road and rail traffic is expected to rise significantly.

According to the Port of Rotterdam, the Princess Alexia Viaduct will provide the capacity needed to manage this growth, ensuring long-term accessibility and safe, efficient traffic flow around Alexiahaven.

Last month, the Port of Rotterdam Authority launched a fully electric hydrofoil patrol vessel as part of a pilot scheme for its fleet renewal programme.
