The Port of Sines and Companhia Siderúgica Nacional (CSN) of Brazil have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as part of the European Commission Global Gateway programme.
The MoU was signed by the President of the APS, José Luís Cacho, and by the Director of CSN, Pedro Brito do Nascimento, at a ceremony held by the Ministry of Infrastructure, counting on the intervention of the Minister of Infrastructure, João Galamba.
The MoU aims to establish the scope, rules, and guiding principles of joint action to develop sustainable, green, and digital logistics corridors to support a strategy centered on three essential pillars: ‘logistics resilience’, ‘energy resilience’ and ‘physical and digital connectivity’.
In his speech, the Minister of Infrastructure, João Galamba, stated: “The relevance of the Memorandum is for the promotion of port infrastructures, transport and the realisation of sustainable, green and digital logistics corridors, which all aim to increase connectivity on a global scale.”
José Luis Cacho assured the Sines Port Authority’s commitment to achieving the objectives of the MoU and highlighted the competitive advantages of the Port of Sines in the promotion of Brazilian foreign trade to Europe, highlighting Sines as the gateway of Brazilian exports to Europe, particularly in the agri-food business.
According to Pedro Brito do Nascimento, Director of the CSN: “The importance of this Memorandum is to vindicate the necessity of covering the energy areas, as well as the safety and environment areas.”
In turn, Sofia Moreira de Sousa, Representative of the European Commission, stressed the importance of connectivity between countries and continents, mainly in the food chain.
The Port of Sines recorded a 16 per cent growth in containerised throughput throughput in the first three months of 2021.
More recently, PSA Sines, the Portuguese subsidiary of PSA International, purchased six Automated Rubber-Tyred Gantry (ARTG) systems from Konecranes.
